Quince 100% Merino Wool Shirt Jacket Review: Why I Sent It Back (Petite 5’2″)

I really wanted to love the Quince 100% Merino Wool Shirt Jacket. Here's how it fits a 5'2" frame, why the boiled wool wasn't for me, and who might love it more than I did.

SKIPMy verdictTOO BIG FOR PETITES

Of all the coats in my Quince try-on, this is the one I decided to return. I really wanted to love the 100% Merino Wool Shirt Jacket, and plenty of people do, but it just wasn’t the right fit for me. Here’s why, how it fits a 5’2″ frame, and who I think will enjoy it more than I did. This post has affiliate links.

The verdict in 30 seconds: I sent it back

What I liked

It’s 100% merino wool and very warm. Jackets made from all merino wool often cost several hundred dollars, so this one at $100 is a real bargain.

Keep in mind

I’m very sensitive to how fabrics feel, and this boiled wool felt a bit rough to me. The oversized fit and dropped shoulders were also more than I needed on my frame.

Why I sent it back

This one really comes down to me. I’m sensitive to certain fabrics, especially anything with a rough or scratchy texture. Quince makes this jacket from boiled merino wool, which has a thicker, more textured feel, and to me it felt rough rather than soft. Boiled wool is known for that texture, and many people love it, so if you’re not as sensitive to fabrics as I am, you may not notice it at all.

The fit was the other piece. It’s designed to be oversized with dropped shoulders, which Quince notes on the product page, and on my petite frame the shoulders sat lower than I’d like and the jacket felt quite roomy. On someone taller, or anyone who likes a relaxed layer, I can see it looking great.

For me, comfort comes first.

A lot of people really love this jacket. It had a 4.7 star rating from 620 reviews on Quince’s site when I checked, and we all have different preferences. If textured wool doesn’t bother you and you like a roomy, relaxed fit, you might love it. If you’ve tried it, I’d love to hear what you thought in the comments.

If you like the look, Quince also makes a 100% Merino Wool Cropped Shirt Jacket. I think the shorter version is really cute. It’s the same boiled merino, though, so keep that in mind if soft fabric matters to you, and if you’re smaller than me, I’d expect it to run big too.

Watch the full try-on

This jacket is the fourth one in my Quince coats video, and it starts at 5:32. I also try on the Wool Cashmere Short Coat, the Featherless Quilted Long Puffer Jacket, a men’s overshirt and the Hooded Wrap Coat Quince gifted me.

Is it true to size?

Not on me. I wore an XS (the color I tried, Heather Bone, may not be available in the US right now, but other colors are) and it ran big, mostly through the shoulders, which makes sense since it’s designed to be oversized. Quince suggests sizing down for a closer fit, but XS is the smallest size they offer, so that wasn’t an option for me. If you’re taller or you like a loose layer, your true size will probably feel the way Quince intended.
